GM recalling nearly 1 million U.S. vehicles for air bag defect

Washington, May 13 (BNA): General Motors said Friday that it will recall nearly a million SUVs in the United States because the driver airbag inflator could explode during deployment.

According to Reuters, the recall covers 994,763 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia vehicles from the 2014 through 2017 model years with units produced by ARC Automotive Inc. The driver air bag unit will be replaced by dealers.

The driver of a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse in Michigan was involved in an accident in which the front driver’s airbag inflator ruptured during deployment, causing facial injuries, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

An inspection dated April 25th confirmed that the front driver airbag inflator was ruptured in the vehicle.

GM said it was still investigating the problem with the help of an outside engineering firm. “General Motors is taking this expanded field action out of an abundance of caution and with the safety of our customers as our highest priority,” the Detroit automaker said.

GM said it was aware of two previous ruptures of ARC-manufactured airbag inflators in 2015 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles, and GM has conducted two previous small recalls of approximately 3,000 ARC inflators.

All three Chevrolet Traverse rip-off events featured the same type of blower.

ARC noted in a letter published Friday that no root cause for these tears has been identified by ARC or GM. ARC said it is evaluating GM’s recall range.
