Germany powers down its last three nuclear plants

Berlin, Apr. 16 (BNA): Germany today, Saturday, shut down its three remaining nuclear plants as part of a long-planned transition to renewable energy.

Xinhua news agency reported that the closure of Emsland, Neckarwestheim II and Isar II came just before midnight.

The energy company, RWE, said in a statement confirming the disconnection of the three reactors from the grid, as “the end of an era.”

Atomic energy advocates say fossil fuels must be phased out first amid global efforts to tackle climate change, arguing that nuclear power generates far fewer greenhouse gas emissions and can be a safe energy source when managed properly.
