Gasser jumps past Sadowski Synnott for Olympic big air gold

BEIJING, Feb. 15 (BUS) – Austrian Anna Jacir performed a massive 1260 cab in her last jump to overtake New Zealand’s Zoe Sadowski Sinnott to win her second consecutive Olympic gold medal in women’s figure skating on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Jacir has held up an average 21-year-old, including 20-year-old Sadusky Senott, who last week won her country’s first gold medal at the Winter Olympics, in slash style.

Sadovsky led Senot Gasser by 0.25 points to enter the third round after both landed a pair of double corks 1080 seconds—two flips off-axis by three turns.

Jacir secured the silver when she slipped off the switch on her last attempt at the Big Air Shougang. She was the first woman to land on a 1260 double cork cab in competition when she did in 2019, and she has done it again here, the only rider to do the 3 1/2 lap trick.

Sadowski Synnott tried to follow up on her 1260s but couldn’t hit the drop. With a big bronze in the air from 2018, Sadoski Sennott became the seventh snowboarder with three Olympic medals, a list that includes Shaun White and Jimmy Anderson.

Japan’s Kokomo Murasi took the bronze in a pair of 1080 seconds. The first Olympic medal was for the 17-year-old.

Sadowski Synnott knocked out the gate with the best first-round trick, a perfectly executed 1080 front double stopper—two off-axis flips by three turns—for which I scored 93.25. Jacir finished second with 90 points after doing the same trick.

The New Zealander followed with a rear double cork 1080, which landed clean for 83.75 points and entered the final round lead – 0.25 ahead of Jacir.

Raira Iwabuchi of Japan attempted the first triple cork – three off-axis flips – in women’s figure skating history and briefly appeared to touch down before turning halfway down the descent. Her competitors still exploded in excitement, collecting her at the bottom of the jump while she waited for the judges’ results. The judges awarded her 37 points.
