Gas leak in India’s Punjab kills 11 people

Punjab, Apr. 30 (BNA): An MP from Punjab state said on Sunday that 11 people were killed and nine were taken to hospital after a gas leak in Ludhiana, Punjab state, north India.

Rajinder Pal Kaur Cheena, a member of the Ludhiana Legislative Assembly, said a team from the National Disaster Response Force was on site with a team of experts to determine the cause and source of the leak.

Police officials were seen patrolling wearing masks and telling local residents to stay away from a cordoned off area, according to ANI’s video feed on Twitter, according to Reuters.

“The incident occurred near a dairy shop and a doctor’s office, although we cannot say for sure where the leak started,” China told Reuters by phone.

“People who came to buy milk in the morning fainted outside,” she said.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Man tweeted that the leak was from a factory, without providing further details.

Three dead bodies “turned blue,” said Anjan Kumar, a local resident, in a video posted on Twitter by ANI.
