G20 summit begins with climate and coronavirus top of agenda

Rome, Oct. 30 (BNA) The Group of Twenty (G20) will start its two-day meeting in Rome later on Saturday with climate action ahead of the COP26 summit and the coronavirus is likely to dominate.

The UN climate summit in Glasgow comes right after the G20 meeting, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believes the battle against climate change could be lost if the G20 does not step up, dpa reported.

“There is a serious risk that Glasgow will not check,” he said.

The coronavirus will also be a major topic at the G-20 meeting, which US President Joe Biden is attending. Some other leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin are participating via video link.

Germany will be represented by Interim Chancellor Angela Merkel and her potential successor, Olaf Scholz.

Acting Finance Minister Schulz, who is already in Rome, said both wanted to send a signal of continuity to their international partners. Merkel arrives early on Saturday.
