Frankfurt win Europa League group and reach last 16

Berlin, December 10 (BNA): Eintracht Frankfurt tied 1-1 with its host Fenerbahce on Thursday to win its group in the European League and advance directly to the round of 16.

Gabriel Sow put the visiting German team ahead in the 29th minute with a shot into the right corner of Philip Kostics’ cross.

But a mistake by Frankfurt defender Makoto Hasebe allowed Mirghem Berisha to level the playing field shortly before the Turkish hosts rested.

Germany’s semi-finalists finished 2019 unbeaten with 12 points, three points ahead of Olympiacos, who lost 1-0 at bottom Royal Antwerp, and now face the third-placed Champions League side in a playoff in the round of 16.

Fenerbahce, who is in third place, is playing a playoff match in the round of 16 in the Conference League.

Play-off matches are scheduled for February 17 and 24, and the last 16 on March 10 and 17.
