France’s Macron signs contested pension law as unions plan more protests

Paris, April 15 (BNA): French President Emmanuel Macron signed on Saturday an unpopular bill to raise the state retirement age.

The announcement of the law in the government’s Official Journal came hours after France’s Constitutional Council approved an increase in the main retirement age in a ruling on Friday.

The legislation, which will gradually raise the age for withdrawing the state pension to 64 from 62, is set to enter into force from September 1.

The president has staked his reputation as a reformer on pension changes, which he says are needed to avoid billions of euros in deficits each year by the end of the decade.
