LONDON, May 29 (BNA) A fire broke out in a luxury yacht in southwest England, today, Saturday, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky, and briefly setting off the burning ship to drift through the mooring.
Police and fire officials said the 85-foot (26-meter) yacht in Torquay, Devon, was “well on fire” and the fire brigade said the vessel contained about 8,000 liters of diesel fuel, prompting local areas and nearby beaches to disinfect, As reported by Reuters. .
Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Due to the levels of smoke and fumes, we are asking residents in the area to close their doors and windows at this time.” Citizens have also been urged to avoid the area and beaches are being disinfected by officers for public safety.
Police said no one was hurt in the fire and the yacht has since been secured after being freed from mooring. The police did not say who owns the yacht.
