Brussels, November 22 (BUS): The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is evaluating an application for a booster injection for Covid-19 using the US company Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine.
The European News Agency said on Monday that the extra dose can be given to people 18 years of age or older at least two months after the first dose.
The agency expects to make a decision within a few weeks. It has already approved booster injections with the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.
EMA experts plan to examine whether this booster shot increases protection against coronavirus infection. The data provided by the manufacturer is evaluated in an accelerated procedure.
The data include results from a trial of 14,000 adults who received a second dose of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine or a placebo two months after the initial dose.
Johnson & Johnson is the only vaccine that requires only one dose and is among the four approved vaccines in the European Union.
The EMA stressed that the final decision on the use of booster compresses rests with national governments or health authorities.
