English Premier League top 3 all win to intensify title race

London, Dec. 11 (BNA): The top three in the Premier League maintained the ferocious pace of their title race with tough wins on Saturday, although all three needed second-half penalty shootouts to make it happen.

Manchester City maintained a one-point lead after Raheem Sterling’s 100th league goal scored a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton at the start of the match, and Liverpool and Chelsea responded with minimal victories.

Aston Villa coach Steven Gerrard’s return to Anfield almost dealt a devastating blow to Liverpool’s title hopes, but Mohamed Salah’s penalty kick in the 67th minute ensured a 1-0 victory for the Reds after goalkeeper Aimee Martinez frustrated the hosts for most of the match, according to the Associated Press.

At Stamford Bridge, Jorginho was forced to convert two penalties – the second in the fourth minute of stoppage time – to beat Leeds 3-2.

His first penalty kick in the 58th minute gave Chelsea a 2-1 lead, but Joe Gilhart equalized in the 83rd minute.

Liverpool remained in second place with Chelsea back with another point in third place.

City may have had a bit of luck with their sixth consecutive league win after Pep Guardiola’s side were awarded a contested penalty in a handball when Joao Moutinho parried Bernardo Silva’s cross with his arm outstretched.

Wolves argued that the ball hit his armpit, but the decision was upheld after a VAR review.
