Danish queen tests positive after UK monarch’s funeral

Copenhagen, September 22 (BNA) The Royal Palace announced today, Wednesday, that Britain’s Queen Margaret II tested positive for the Corona virus, after attending the funeral of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.

The royal family said in a statement that Margaret, 82, who ascended the throne 50 years ago, had rescinded her official duties after Tuesday night’s test.

The palace said her eldest son, heir to the throne, Crown Prince Frederick and his wife, Crown Princess Mary, would replace the queen at a dinner with Danish government officials and members of parliament.

Margaret previously tested positive for the virus in February. At the time, the palace said she had received three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Queen was among the dignitaries who attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday at Westminster Abbey in London.

Margaret’s half-century reign made her Europe’s longest-serving monarch after the death on Sept. 8 of Elizabeth, 96, who ruled the country for 70 years.

Out of respect for the late British monarch, Margaret asked her court to amend the September 10-11 program to mark her fiftieth anniversary. Among the events she canceled at short notice were appearing on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace to receive well-wishers and riding a horse-drawn carriage through Copenhagen.

Margaret was proclaimed queen on January 15, 1972, the day after her father, King Frederick IX, died after a short illness.
