Prague, October 19 (BNA) – The Constitutional Affairs Committee of the Czech Senate has declared President Milos Zeman unfit for the post of president for health reasons, Committee Chairman Zdenek Hraba announced today, Tuesday.
This measure must be approved by both Houses of Parliament by a simple majority. Then the president’s authority temporarily passes to the prime minister and leaders of the House and Senate.
Zeman will retain his presidential title. But Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis called for the move to be delayed.
A decision is not expected before November 8, when the newly elected lower house of parliament, the lower house of parliament, meets for its first session.
Zeman has been in intensive care at the Central Military Hospital in Prague since October 10. Officially, very little is known about his medical condition.
According to the hospital, Zeman is being treated for complications from one of his chronic diseases. His condition is considered stable.
Senate President Milos Westersel cited a doctor’s report on Monday saying Zeeman was currently unfit for the position and that his further prognosis was highly uncertain.
The crisis comes amid negotiations to form a new government. Zeman was hospitalized a day after an election in which the opposition won a clear majority of 108 out of 200 seats in the House of Representatives.
After Vystrcil found out about Zeman’s current inability to work, the police launched an investigation. According to an official spokesperson, “possible illegal acts showing evidence of crimes against the republic are being investigated”.
According to a report in the newspaper MF Dnes, the investigation is directed against Zeman’s closest associates, who are accused of concealing the true state of the head of state.
