Cyclone Kompasu strikes Philippines, kills 9

Manila, Oct. 12 (BNA) Nine people were killed in the Philippines and 11 others went missing Tuesday due to floods and landslides caused by torrential rains caused by tropical cyclone Compasso, the National Disaster Agency said.

Compasso, with maximum winds of 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour, had sucked up the remnants of an earlier typhoon before making landfall in the Philippines on Monday evening. Reuters reported that nearly 1,600 people were evacuated.

The disaster agency said it was checking information from its provincial units that four people were killed in landslides in northern Benguet province and five were killed in flash floods in Palawan, an island province in the country’s southwest.

The authorities are conducting search and rescue operations for 11 people, most of whom went missing after landslides.

The Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,600 islands, experiences about 20 storms or typhoons annually, causing torrential rains that trigger deadly landslides.

President Roque said on Tuesday that President Rodrigo Duterte had been monitoring the government’s disaster response.

He added that rescuers were at the site, while electricity and water rehabilitation and road disinfection work were continuing.

The State Meteorological Agency said Compasso, the 13th tropical storm to enter the Philippines, is expected to leave its territory on Tuesday.
