Chelsea can learn from Arsenal rebuild, says Lampard

London, May 1 (BNA): Arsenal’s interim manager Frank Lampard said ahead of the two teams’ meeting on Tuesday that Arsenal’s recent Premier League success could provide a blueprint for Chelsea’s attempt to rebuild after a disappointing campaign.

Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford last week left them 12th in the table, and they stumbled towards their worst season since 1993-94 – when they finished 14th under Glenn Hoddle – despite the massive spending of their new American owners.

Reuters said that Chelsea will face, on Tuesday, the Arsenal team, which finished outside the top four for six consecutive seasons between 2016 and 2022, but finds itself at the present time stuck in a busy race for the title after a significant improvement under the leadership of coach Mikel Arteta.

“There’s a long process in terms of getting where you want to be,” Lampard told reporters before the trip to the Emirates Stadium. “I remember facing Mikel at that early stage.”

“Sometimes they played five at the back, sometimes four; now they have a clear identity. There was a lot of work through the team, Mikel, compatibility and good recruiting. Do we have the potential to do that? Yes. Do you take time and make good decisions? Absolutely, yes.” .but you can make it happen.

“The manager, the players and the owners have been questioned and this process can take two or three years. They are a great example of that being done well.”

Lampard acknowledged that the Chelsea players’ confidence was “low” due to the poor performance, but he challenged his team to confront their lack of self-confidence with hard work.

“You can just work to get a level of performance to bring back confidence,” said Lampard.

“I’ve been here in moments where confidence is low because nobody likes to lose games. I’ve had moments as a player where we dropped our standards as a group and we had to raise them.

“Looking at the history, we’ve been able to win it back by working hard. We can only think about the future and work hard to get the team where we want to be.”

Lampard added that defender Kalidou Coulibaly may be absent for some time after suffering a hamstring injury against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
