Campaign for Greek election begins with dissolved parliament

Athens, April 22 (BNA): The campaign for Greece’s national elections on May 21 officially opened today, Saturday, with the dissolution of the parliament that was elected in July 2019.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou to propose a solution and she agreed to it, as required by Greece’s constitution.

Mitsotakis said that with less than three months before the MPs’ four-year term expires, next month’s vote does not qualify as an early election, according to the Associated Press.

Shortly after his meeting with the president, Mitsotakis made a televised speech defending his government’s record.

He listed his accomplishments as well as the challenges that lay ahead, and sought to advance the case for stable government moving forward.
