Brentford beats Southampton 3-0 to boost hopes for top-10

London May 7 (U.S.): Brentford scored two early goals in the 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday to boost the club’s hopes of finishing the first half of their first Premier League season.

Pontus Jansson and Yuan Wesa scored within a minute of each other as Brentford moved within close range of 10th-placed Brighton, who hosted Manchester United late on Saturday.

Evan Toni put in the first goal in the 13th minute, collected a corner kick and found Janson inside the 6-yard box for an easy finish.

Then Wesa picked up a loose ball after teammate Christian Eriksen fell, and shot low at the right corner of the net from outside the penalty area.

Christopher Agger increased the difference with his first goal for Brentford when he overcame a defender and fired between the legs of goalkeeper Fraser Forster in the 79th minute at Brentford Community Stadium in west London.

This is the third loss in the last four games for the fifteenth-placed Southampton.
