BAS Completes development of cargo cooling facility to activate Bahraini-Saudi Customs Cooperation Agreement

Manama, February 6 (BNA): Within the framework of the national strategy for the logistics services sector, and in pursuit of providing the best solutions and services that contribute to achieving the most effective customs practices in the field of freight and unifying them. Joint Relations In the field, the Kingdom of Bahrain signed a joint customs cooperation agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on December 30, 2019. The agreement implies mutual recognition of the economic operator program approved by both parties, leading to the establishment of a joint customs cooperation agreement. An entry point that promotes intra-regional trade through coordinated and sustainable customs procedures.

Under the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, regarding the participation of all sectors in advancing the achievement of the provisions of the economic recovery plan, and in line with the directives of His Highness regarding promising development. In the Kingdom, including the logistics sector, BAS has launched a project to modernize cargo refrigeration units for air freight and cargo parcels located on the western side of Bahrain International Airport. BAS has worked to enhance and expand the facilities of the refrigeration facility to meet all storage requirements for imported goods via air freight in Bahrain.

On this occasion, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of BAS, Nabil Khalid Kanoo, said: “In compliance with the company’s achievement of the national plans related to the development of the logistics services sector, as well as the joint agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The idea of ​​modernizing the refrigeration units at Bahrain International Airport arose to ship cosmetics and later medicines to ensure their arrival At maximum quality due to reliable storage unit/method”.

He added, “The aim of the new facility is to facilitate the arrival of these imported goods from abroad to Bahrain International Airport, and then transport them via land freight to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia without the need for re-inspection. We realize the positive impact of this step on increasing incoming shipments to Bahrain and enhancing freight traffic.” and international transportation of goods through Bahrain, as many air freight companies prefer to land in the Kingdom to transport their goods to Saudi Arabia.Receiving numerous trucking orders for Saudi Arabia from prominent freight service providers including CargoLux and LH, boosting the land transportation business in BAS This service has been activated to ship cosmetics as a first step, with future directions to include pharmaceuticals as soon as possible to meet the pharmaceutical needs in Bahrain and the region.”

Mr. Mohamed Khalil Ahmed, CEO of BAS, commented, “The updates made to the refrigeration units included the installation of a Building Management System (BMS) in order to automate the building and achieve higher efficiency in the automatic control and monitoring of all equipment and devices to avoid any technical faults that may affect the safety of storage.”

He added, “The sizes of the cold rooms were also expanded to double the storage capacity in the cargo cooling facility to meet the demand for storing pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Moreover, two additional cold rooms were added with a total area of ​​415 square meters operating at a temperature of (15-25 degrees Celsius), which It led to the division of the cold store into three sections, one of which is specialized in storing foodstuffs, another for medicines and pharmaceuticals, and finally cosmetics.The project also included modernizing storage freezers approved to operate at a set temperature -20, and adding two coolers to the previous refrigeration unit, which made the total area For cooling units in the facility up to 222.7 square meters, with a cooling degree of up to 2-8 degrees Celsius.

BAS through the development of the BAS Cargo Refrigeration Facility is seeking to obtain the ‘CEIV’ certification awarded to the company by the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics, a certification awarded to reliable carriers for shipping time and temperature-sensitive products. This initiative will also contribute to consolidating the Kingdom’s position on the map of logistics and trade exchange, as a preferred destination for air freight in the region.
