Bahrain marks World Malaria Day

Manama, April 24 (BNA): The Ministry of Health, along with the rest of the world, celebrates World Malaria Day, which falls on April 25 of each year, in support of the World Health Organization’s efforts to protect people from life-threatening diseases. The occasion aims to raise awareness of the importance of prevention as a major strategy to reduce the spread of malaria.

Malaria is one of the diseases that burdens the whole world. The Bahraini government harnessed all necessary efforts and resources to combat the disease endemic in Bahrain in the 1930s. The Malaria Administration was established in 1939 to start malaria control programs on a regular basis. Thanks to massive efforts and continuous control, the last case of local transmission of malaria was recorded in 1979. The World Health Organization declared the Kingdom of Bahrain officially free of malaria in 1982.

The Kingdom of Bahrain is among the first countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to eliminate malaria. Since then, the Kingdom has been proud of achieving 44 continuous years without local transmission of malaria thanks to the efforts of all workers in the Ministry of Health and other concerned sectors to keep Bahrain free of malaria.
