Manama, January 25 (BNA): Riffa Views International School (RVIS) hosted the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s International Science and Technology Initiative (MISTI) at its Level 5 Innovation Center.
The workshop was sponsored by the US Embassy and was the first of its kind in the GCC.
The program was initiated and co-founded by three Bahraini MIT alumni, Marwa Al Alawi (Masters in Mechanical Engineering, PhD), Maryam Al Jumairi (Harvard and Fulbright PhD student), and Latifa Al Khayyat (MIT graduate student in Architecture). As a means of enriching the scientific and educational communities in Bahrain by promoting cultural and scientific exchange between Bahraini educational institutions, faculty members, and students with MIT, and formulating an interdisciplinary model of education and practice.
Under the guidance of four MIT coaches, Kristan Helby, Abdul Hussain Theatres, Maxwell Yoon, and Nguema Helmo, and the supervision of Level 5 Principal Zahi Wehbe, 20 high school students from RVIS and three other private schools in Bahrain participated in a wide range of: A variety of engineering and innovative practices that allowed participants to develop essential skills relevant to the field including 3D digital modeling and rapid prototyping using specialized manufacturing tools such as 3D printers and laser engraving.
These skills were then applied in robotics, with students programming and building robots capable of distinguishing colors, grasping objects, and firing projectiles.
“We exposed students to a variety of engineering and robotics tasks designed to challenge their reasoning and problem-solving skills. The design and energy they brought to each project deepened my passion for education,” Kristan Helpby, a fourth-year PhD student and one of four MIT instructors, told the workshop. the work.
The MIT instructors will take their workshop to the American University of Bahrain (AUB), where they will run a similar workshop for students of universities and public schools in Bahrain. They will also run a two-day workshop for students through the Ministry of Youth Affairs.
