BACA launches Contemporary Crafts Competition 2023

Manama, April 20 (BNA): The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) announced the launch of the Contemporary Handicrafts Competition.


The competition coincides with the International Day of Creativity and Innovation, which the United Nations celebrates on April 21 of each year, and the competition is based on the authority’s vision, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of creativity and innovation in achieving sustainable development.


The Contemporary Crafts Competition aims to highlight Bahraini handicrafts and traditional industries, as well as to promote a culture of industrial design, aesthetics of interior objects, and modern methods of dealing with natural materials.


The competition also aims to explore possible designs and understand the aesthetic and functional qualities of artwork/design, taking into account form, function and ergonomics.


The competition accepts entries from Bahrain and foreign craftsmen, artists, architects, interior designers, product designers, graphic designers, digital designers and any designer from all backgrounds to submit their creative work, be it companies, teams/groups, innovators or manufacturers. suppliers, freelancers, hobbyists or students.


Participants will have to highlight Bahraini crafts, including pottery making, weaving weaving, weaving palm leaves and baskets, traditional chest making and traditional carpentry, coffee pot making and blacksmithing, traditional embroidery and clothing making, Bahraini dhows and ships, and finally crafts related to the sea.


Entries must reflect Bahraini heritage and craftsmanship, whether in concept development, use of materials, or application of traditional techniques to the production process. It should also reflect the research, data collected, and design process.

Registration is open between April 21st and August 30th on the BACA website (www.culture.gov.bh).
