Austrian chancellor: If cases climb, no apres-ski for unvaccinated

Vienna, September 18 (BNA): Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz promises a safe skiing season, according to the German news agency (dpa).

In an interview with Funke Media Group published on Saturday, he said that if the coronavirus situation worsens, only vaccinated guests will be able to get to après-ski establishments.

He said that in Austria, 70 per cent of people over the age of 12 are vaccinated and most tourists are also vaccinated.

“So in that regard, there is nothing standing in the way of a safe holiday in Austria,” he said.

The Austrian party and ski destination Ischgl has become a coronavirus hotspot in 2020. On Friday, an experiment began about the spread of the coronavirus from the ski resort in Tyrol to other parts of Europe at the start of the pandemic.

The first infections were identified in Ischgl in March 2020.

A group of relatives of those who died from Covid-19 after visiting Ischgl are demanding compensation.

Their lawyer says Kurz and Austrian officials failed to take appropriate measures to protect people’s health at the start of the pandemic. The Austrian state rejects the case and says the authorities acted correctly with their knowledge at the time.

In the interview, Kurz said a safe winter will be ensured with rules that mean hotels and restaurants are only available to those who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, have recovered from the virus or have tested negative.
