Australia and South Korea sign 1-billion-Australian-dollar defence pact

Sydney, Dec. 13 (BNA) Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed on Monday a $1 billion defense contract.

The Australian government said in a statement that the agreement calls for the Korean defense company Hanwha to provide 30 self-propelled howitzers, 15 ammunition supply vehicles and radars to detect enemy artillery.

Defense Minister Peter Dutton said, “The new vehicles’ primary ability is to shoot and move quickly, avoiding enemy counterattack. This project will mean a significant increase in the level of firepower and security of Australian artillery capabilities.”

Local media reported that the A$1 billion (US$717 million) deal is the largest defense contract ever made between Australia and an Asian country.

Moon is in the Australian Capital Territory for a four-day visit to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canberra and Seoul.

The two governments said Australia and South Korea would upgrade their relations to a “comprehensive strategic partnership” during the visit.

Australia has comprehensive strategic partnerships, or its equivalent, already in place with ASEAN, China, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.

Dutton described the agreement as a boost to Australian firepower and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

“[It] It is one of several projects that will modernize the Australian Army, ensuring that it continues to maintain an advantage in capabilities now and into the future.”

“We are committed to maintaining the security of our region while protecting our interests in a rapidly changing global environment,” Dutton added.

Moon is the first international leader to visit Australia since border restrictions due to the pandemic were eased.
