Amazon to shut down food-delivery business in India

New Delhi, Nov. 25 (BNA): Amazon Inc. (AMZN.O) said it will shut down a food delivery company it was testing in India, a day after announcing it was winding down. Online learning platform for high school students in the country.


It said Amazon Foods, a business the company was experimenting with in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, would be shut down.

“As part of our annual operational planning review process, we have made the decision to discontinue Amazon Food,” a company spokesperson told Reuters.


“We are not taking these decisions lightly. We are phasing out these programs in a way to take care of our existing customers and partners.”


The Economic Times previously reported that the business will be discontinued from December 29 onwards, citing a letter from the company to its restaurant partners, Reuters reported.


On Thursday, Amazon said it would shut down its Amazon Academy platform in India that was launched early last year amid a boom in virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.


Reuters reported last week that an uncertain macroeconomic environment is causing the e-commerce giant to review its global workforce, as the company plans to lay off about 10,000 employees in corporate and technology roles.
