All U.S. embassy staff evacuated from Sudan, White House says

Khartoum, April 23 (BNA) US President Joe Biden said today, Saturday, that the US military has evacuated US government employees from Khartoum, adding that Washington is suspending operations at its embassy there as fighting continues between rival leaders in Sudan.

“This tragic violence in Sudan has claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians,” Biden said in a statement. “It is unreasonable and it must stop.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that “all US personnel and their families” have been evacuated safely and that the US will continue to assist Americans in Sudan with planning for their safety, Reuters reported.

US officials said all US government employees and a small number of diplomats from other countries were evacuated in the operation, which killed fewer than 100 people.

US military officials said that just over 100 US special operations forces participated in the evacuations, entering and leaving Sudan without being attacked by warring factions on the ground.

Other foreign nationals began evacuating from a Red Sea port in Sudan on Saturday. Japan’s TBS reported that United Nations personnel including Japanese nationals and their families will be evacuated from Sudan on Sunday.

The bloody onslaught of urban warfare has trapped large numbers in the Sudanese capital, crippling the airport and making some roads impassable.

The United Nations and foreign countries have urged the rival military leaders to respect a declared cease-fire that has been mostly ignored, to open safe passage for fleeing civilians and to supply much-needed aid.
