AFC President hails World Cup 2022 in UAE

Manama, October 21 (BNA) The President of the Asian Football Confederation and First Vice President of FIFA, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, said that the decision to choose the UAE to host the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup reflects the growing global confidence. Sheikh Salman congratulated the UAE Football Association and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council on choosing FIFA as the capital of the UAE to host the world championship, praising the successful teamwork spirit that ensured global confidence in the country.

He said, “The UAE’s hosting of the Cup for the fifth time reflects the resounding success achieved by Emirati national cadres to achieve excellence and distinction at all international levels.”

He affirmed the AFC’s readiness to provide all necessary support to the UAE to ensure the successful organization of the Cup.

The International Football Association (FIFA) confirmed yesterday that the FIFA Club World Cup 2020 will be held in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE capital has hosted the FIFA Club World Cup four times before, in 2009, 2010, 2017 and 2018. Barcelona and Inter Milan won the first two editions in Abu Dhabi, while Real Madrid were crowned champions for the next two editions in 2017 and 2018.

At the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, Gianni Infantino confirmed that the event would take place in Abu Dhabi and that it had been postponed to early 2022.

The Club World Cup will feature the European champions, Chelsea. African champion Al-Ahly. Al Jazira, the league champion of the host country, who won the Arabian Gulf League title last season, and other continental champions.
